It is estimated by the Society of Automotive Engineers in the United States that 70% automobile accidents on the high way result from the under-inflated tires caused by slow leaks. To respond to a mandate in the Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability, and Documentation (TREAD) Act, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the US requires installation of TPMS in all passenger cars and new light vehicles by September 1, 2008.
